Argentina defeated Algeria 3-0 in a Group J match of the Group Stage competition at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, on Tuesday, June 16. L. Messi scored all three goals for Argentina.

Messi opened the scoring in the 17th minute from open play, assisted by R. de Paul. He then doubled Argentina's lead in the 60th minute, again from open play. Messi completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute with another open play goal, assisted by N. Gonzalez.

Both teams made multiple substitutions. Argentina brought on N. Molina for G. Montiel at half-time, followed by J. Alvarez for L. Martinez and N. Gonzalez for T. Almada both in the 55th minute. Later, N. Paz replaced L. Messi and N. Otamendi came on for C. Romero in the 80th minute. Algeria’s substitutions saw H. Aouar replace H. Boudaoui, M. Amoura come on for A. Gouiri, and R. Mahrez replace A. Hadj Moussa, all in the 64th minute. A. Boulbina replaced N. Bentaleb in the 81st minute, and R. Zerrouki came on for I. Maza in the 82nd minute.
