    Notable absentees

Captain Granit Xhaka, 33, plays in his fourth consecutive World Cup and extends his Swiss caps record (144+). Forward Zeki Amdouni was selected despite barely playing this season due to a serious knee injury. Christian Fassnacht and Cédric Itten were surprise inclusions; Fassnacht topped the Swiss Super League with 18 goals. Switzerland are in Group B with Bosnia, Canada, and Qatar, opening against Qatar on June 13 in Santa Clara.
