Notable absentees
This is the Socceroos' SIXTH consecutive World Cup appearance and SEVENTH overall — a remarkable run for Australian football. SEVENTEEN of the 26 are heading to their first World Cup, the largest debutant contingent in Socceroos history. Captain Mat Ryan and Mathew Leckie will equal the national record of FOUR World Cup appearances (joining Tim Cahill and Mark Milligan). Aziz Behich, Miloš Degenek, and Jackson Irvine head to their third tournament; Cameron Devlin, Ajdin Hrustić, Awer Mabil, and Harry Souttar to their second. Cristian Volpato (Sassuolo) joined the squad just days after switching allegiance from Italy. Popovic — a former Crystal Palace defender — is now seeking Australia's first World Cup quarter-final. The Socceroos open Group D against Türkiye on June 14 in Vancouver, then face co-hosts USA on June 20 in Seattle, and finish vs Paraguay on June 26 in Santa Clara.
